Turn and Face the Strange
When you are faced with resistance you never win on the strength of your argument, you win on the strength of your relationship. __________________________________________ Xavier Amador, Harvard Business Review

Guns
I just had an epiphany of sorts; I've never really understood why people, especially men, felt the desire for a firearm. I hunted at one time and so had several rifles and a couple pistols, but since I gave up hunting I just didn't see the need. While I still don't feel the need to carry a weapon, I think I understand.
Carrying a firearm may give some a certain amount of control in their lives. So much seems beyond even our barest influence that a pistol may say, "At least I can control this. At least I can protect myself and my family."
Today, a thought crossed my mind that I too might like even the illusion of control a firearm gives; the thing is, I don't believe I could shoot someone in order to protect myself. I guess, deep down, I care more about others than I do myself; I just don't believe I could live with the guilt of taking another's life to save my own.
If I had any family to protect I might see things differently, but that time has passed for me. Today, I have only myself to look out for and if the Good Lord wants to call me home, I'm at His disposal.
So, those of you with guns, I understand. I do believe the control you feel it grants is just an illusion, but if the illusion makes you feel better why should I care.
That really is the essence of liberty; as long as it doesn't affect anybody else you should be able to do whatever you like.

I am a Rock
The realization that, ultimately, we're all alone in this world is a tough thing. You can believe that this or that person is there for you, but the reality is that when you really need someone they won't be there.
Now I'm not talking about when you're just a bit unhappy or in minor trouble; no, I'm taking about when you're thinking things you shouldn't. When you're thinking about killing yourself or something really bad at two o'clock in the morning.

Group Rights
“You have to remember, rights don't come in groups we shouldn't have 'gay rights'; rights come as individuals, and we wouldn't have this major debate going on. It would be behavior that would count, not what person belongs to what group.”

If you're going to make foolish pronouncements on Facebook; don't be upset when rational people point out your ignorance. If you feel the need to publicly display your ignorance and you don't want me to point it out; do both of us a favor and unfriend me.
If you like me, but find me annoying sometimes, don't feel like the lone ranger. I won't be offended if you say, "Doug, stop. You're annoying me."
You think it's tough listening to me, trying being inside my head where it never stops. Seriously, have some sympathy.

The Race Deck
I’ve tried to remember who first
played the ‘Race Card’. Thinking back it seems to me I first heard about this
card during the Simpson trial, but I can’t be sure. I’ve wondered: is it a face
card or a number card? What suit is it? In Blackjack, what is its value?
After the events of this past
week I’ve come to believe it is in fact a ‘Race Deck’.
Reading the countless articles
about these tragic events making the rounds I couldn’t help but notice that
just about everyone was identified by name and race. Nobody was listed as tall
or short; there were no thin or ‘not-thin’ people; they were not Protestant or Catholic
or Muslim; they were not Democrats or Republicans; they were not rich or poor;
they were individuals, part of a group they have no control over. Isn’t this
the very definition of racism?
A belief that race is
the primary determinant of
human traits and capacities and that racial differences
produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.
So every news outlet is
inherently racist because, other than name, they are stating that race is the
primary difference between people.

I'm Afraid for Jennifer Aniston!
I love Jennifer Aniston!
She's beautiful, seems quite charming, and a pleasant addition to any Romantic Comedy cast. I do think she's made a deal with the devil, so that's a bit of a worry. Other than that, perfect!
Why do I worry she's made a deal with the Son of the Morning?
Have you looked at her, closely? She's getting prettier, her skin is smoother, her voice is becoming more melodic each passing day.
She's still rounded!
Okay, I'm 50 and I remember Jane Fonda coming close, but if you paid attention she also got more "pointed", you see? Not round and smooth, but sharp and angular; severe. Jane has got to be in her 70's and she's still a darn fine looking lady, but nobody is going to confuse current Jane with Barbarella (talk about rounded!). Jen, though, looks younger than Rachel. She looks like Rachel's cute younger sister.
Jennifer, please stop it. Brad is gone. Nobody willingly leaves Angelina Jolie; like the speed of light her attraction is a constant. I think you're prettier, but Jolie is like bacon. You don't know why, but you can't escape from that black hole.
So. Jen. Please. Stop.
If not for me than do it for Ross.
